A Few Words About Schedules

Well, it’s that time of year again. The holidays have come and gone and now that your bills are due, your work hours might have been cut. It probably comes at the worst possible time and you may find yourself asking if you are being scheduled properly. There are two times a year when you can count on the hours in your store being cut, the first is the week you’ll receive your contractual raise and the second is the first of the year. This year is no exception. Our union representatives have received many calls about schedules and the number of hours the part-timers are receiving. Let’s review some of the contract language that covers the way your manager or department head can write your schedule.

RITE-AID

If you have seniority, you will receive more hours than a less senior person.

FOOD STORES

Work Schedule

The Employer shall post your schedule on Friday.

Daily Guarantee

All part-time employees shall be guaranteed no less than four hours work with pay each day.

Weekly Guarantee

Seniority

The above language is a very brief synopsis of the contracts. I urge you to read your specific contract and contact your union representative if you have any questions or work in a location other than the two referenced above.

Stewards are the eyes, ears and voice of the union in the workplace. They are able to correct problems on the spot through their rapport with supervisors.

A steward acts as a two-way expeditor of information from the union to the members, and vice versa. Members rely on stewards for accurate, timely information about what's going on in their union and every union needs reports from its stewards about the views of the members. Stewards meet together periodically for education and training.

Being a steward is an interesting and vital job. It is often called the most essential job in labor management relations.

Effective stewards are men and women who have earned the respect of both members and management.  They can often mean the difference between harmonious, cooperative relations between the union and management and relations characterized by acrimony and unresolved problems.

Leadership on the steward level also can make a difference in the strength of a union. Stewards who communicate with the members and accurately report back to the union on the views of the members can make a difference between solidarity and disunity.

Satisfaction in helping others is the only reward. But for the members who serve as stewards, there is no higher reward.
