Stewards Seminar A Raging Success
The 2001 Annual Stewards Seminar was one of the best
ever! Good classes, great speakers and cool prizes. Lunch was very good too!
George Hartwell opened the event talking about steward
recognition and about the many, many products manufactured and services rendered by UFCW
members. He also showed a moving video of our members in action set within a patriotic
theme. This year George was happy to see approximately 150 stewards there. With the entire
staff and some of our providers in attendance our count swelled to over 200 people.
The skit by Mike Pritchard and Ronnie Maxwell was
outstanding also. Kudos to both of them for a job well done. Thank you guys!
Our guest speakers included Dwayne Carmen the Regional
Director for the International who spoke on organizing and the gains we have made from our
organizing efforts in the past. Also speaking was Dennis Hayes the local's highly esteemed
Labor Attorney. Dennis is a regular speaker at our seminars and always does an outstanding
presentation. This year was no exception. In fact the audience did not want to let him end
his presentation this time even though he went over in his allotted time. Dennis was
entertaining as well as informative.
The Assistant Regional Director Javier Sandoval also
delighted the crowd with his presentation. Thank you to Javier for attending this year and
bringing us your special talent.
We had two classes this year which most everyone seemed
to enjoy. One of the classes was on Steward Recognition and Meeting the Members, the
other was on Organizing and Right-To-Work. Both classes seemed to arouse great interest in
the stewards who attended.
In closing George raffled off the really cool prizes
donated by some of our providers including a DVD Player, a HP Computer and a trip to
Las Vegas.
If you are a steward and did not attend this year's
seminar we missed you and we are sure you would have enjoyed the day as much as everyone
else did. We hope you will make it next year. If you are not a steward but would like to
be one, or are interested in finding out more about becoming a steward please contact your
